PESCHICI, EXCURSIONS NOT TO BE MISSED

• TREMITI ISLANDS : The small archipelago includes the islands of San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia and Pianosa. It condenses beautiful sites such as crags, cliffs, grottoes, bays, rocks and reefs.
Once used as a refuge by Saracen and Dalmatian pirates and corsairs, it became a convict settlement during the reign of the Bourbons. In 1989 it was turned into a Protected Marine Sanctuary and has been part of the National Park of the Gargano since 1996.
• MARINE CAVES : Throughout the centuries, the sea and wind have shaped the grottoes set along the fractures of the calcareous mass. Each grotto has peculiar features that have inspired a different name: the bell grotto, the bottomless grotto, the two-eyed grotto, the tomatoes grotto, the smugglers’ grotto, the emerald grotto, the big bell grotto.
• SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO : Saint Pio from Pietralcina performed real acts of charity and miracles for which he became popular.
Today, the town attracts pilgrims from all over the world, visiting the sites linked to Padre Pio and to his life, the Convent of the Cappuccini Friars, the new Church (with the saint’s shrine), the great Via Crucis and the bronze statue of the friar made by Francesco Messina.
• MONTE SANT'ANGELO : Having attracted convict pilgrims for centuries, Monte Sant’Angelo is the emblem of Gargano history and spirituality.
Here you can visit the Sanctuary Cave of San Michele, one of the oldest and most important places of Christian worship; the Rotari Tomb, a XII c. baptistery with a cupola, dedicated to a Longobardic king who died in 625 AD; the Norman Castle and the Medieval neighbourhood of ‘Junno’, with its beautiful streets and architecture.
• UMBRA FOREST : What is left of the original millenary woodland covering the Gargano is in the Umbra Forest: an attractive inland venue.
Despite heavy devastation and intense felling in the last three centuries, the Forest has preserved almost intact its majestic and imposing lush vegetation including a wide range of trees and shrubbery.
• PESCHICI: The rocky mountains of the Gargano have generated Peschici. Right above the sea, the town dominates the surrounding landscape of northern Gargano, where as far as the eye can see green Aleppo pinewoods are interspersed among wide golden bays. Peschici is striking with its labyrinth of narrow streets in the old town centre and the typical white buildings with grey cupola roofs. Owing to its charm, the town is considered the Gem of the Gargano. |
